Matt Lowell has transformed his sound from the singer-songwriter arena to an impressive artwork of intricate instrumental parts and thought-provoking lyrics that showcase his indie credibility. After being voted “Artist To Watch” by Clear Channel, Lowell’s warm, enveloping voice was captured on his “Swan Lake” EP, which was released on 8 March 2011. Swan Lake was co-written with Dead Oceans Recording artist John Vanderslice and produced by Joel Hamilton (Black Keys, Matisyahu, Sparklehorse) and John Davis (Bassist for Nerve). In addition, Vanderslice and Hamilton introduced Lowell to Minna Choi the arranger of the indie MagikMagik Orchestra and immediately decided to make them a part of “Swan Lake.” All of Lowell’s work earlier in 2011 paved the way for his upcoming release “Drop Your Guns,” which was produced by John Davis.

The use of ambient and electronic components provide the sonic backdrop to compositions of soulful pop and rock while some of the arrangements are reminiscent of the late 90′s and early 2000′s style and approach to music production. Flourishes and textures shape the sound while Lowell’s lyrics, guitars, and overall delivery rounds it out and gives shape to a harmonious flow.

Steal my song

Big words, to be sure, but hot damn, listen to the title track from Matt Lowell’s Swan Lake EP. It’s four notes, the same four notes, carried across several different chords, but in an interesting twist, the song is largely bass-free, with those four notes hitting at an unlikely spot. Musically, it travels this strange [...]
